Volunteers
Volunteers support us in a number of critical ways: college and high school coaches instruct various sports; local artists work with the girls in activities such as painting, drawing, crafts and the talent show. Additional volunteers offer assistance in journaling and photography while others join the girls each evening and morning as meals are served to assure adequate adult presence at all times.

girls first, then women
Building on the great success of last year, the Tulane Xavier National Center of Excellence in Women's Health (TUXCOE) is looking forward to its second summer collaborating with Girls First in the implementation of Girls First, Then Women, an intergenerational peer health education program merging health knowledge with leadership skills. Through this program, Girls First Counselors in Training (CITs) are trained to teach the campers health education sessions about female biology, physical development, personal hygiene, healthy lifestyle choices, as well as communication, decision-making, goal-setting and leadership.
Though very similar to last year's program, the Summer 2004 session will include some exciting modifications, all of which are based on the input of the CITs and campers themselves. Examples of curriculum content changes include incorporation of session discussion on a healthy diet-what it is and how to have it, and mental wellness- recognizing feelings and what to do when you feel lonely, afraid or angry. We will also be offering two entirely new program components as part of Girls First, Then Women. Mother-Daughter events will create a venue for mother and daughters to come together and learn how to be healthy, both physically and mentally, as a team. For the Girls First, Then Women Alums we will be offering TUXCOE Internships, where our young women can intern with TUXCOE to learn more about women's health issues and to further develop their leadership skills.
